点评:Please note this is a review of our visit to the Country Park (Dog walking & recreation) and not relevant for the animal park on the same site.
We were nearing the end of what had been a lovely walk around the meadows & woodlands at Southwick Country Park, one of our favourite places to take my 14-month-old Poppy, a Cavachon Therapy dog, the sweetest, gentle, most loving you could wish for. She is about 11 kg with dinky legs, just trots along, friendly with everyone and all dogs, she is so well trained and socialised.
We have been here several times before and always really enjoyed the vast open spaces, the people, and dogs we have met, and the peacefulness. Normally I walk alone here with Poppy and had always felt so safe but not anymore, I do not think I shall be back at least not alone. I do not know how I would have coped if I had not been with my son and grandson.
Just before we crossed the bridge 2 women with 2 black & white dogs, both off leads, came over the bridge first. The larger of the 2 dogs (and it was much larger & quite a long haired almost fluffy black and white, although like a collie must have been crossed with something big due to the size of it, maybe weighed as much as 30 kg).
Within the blink of an eye this dog saw my Poppy and literally flew past our family charging towards her where she was just plodding on following us. There must have been a look in its eyes telling her it was not friendly but was coming to attack her because she immediately sensed the danger and began yelping in fear even before it had set upon her.
I was completely shocked she had never made a noise like that ever before, bless her she tried to run for protection behind me, but the dog was so quick even I was nearly knocked over as he plunged at her hind quarters, and it brought her down instantly. If I had had time to pick her up, I would have, but it happened so quickly and it was such a full-on vicious attack had I put my hands in the way I would have been bitten.
IT WAS HORRIFIC, I thought I had lost her for good, I really thought this dog was going to kill her.
Poppy could be heard by other people in the park screaming/yelping as this completely un-provoked attack took place. We made sure we spoke to other dog walkers on our way to the car to warn them.
The only positive was that the woman (quite tall & broad, white top) looked like a jogger possibly, was there in seconds behind me to grab the beast.
Poppy was so terrified she ran away still screaming/yelping, and she never goes far from us, but my son had a job to catch her as she was just so desperate to get away from this cruel horrible dog.
I shouted at her why was the dog not on a lead; the woman did not say anything at all, says it all does it not. At that point none of us knew if she was badly injured or not.
By the time I'd caught up with my son & Poppy to make sure she was safe with him, just a few seconds (as this all happened so quickly) and I returned just back around the corner expecting them to either be coming to make sure everything was ok, the women and dogs were gone. Another dog walker said she had spotted them but when they saw her, they turned back only to disappear into woodland. I tried to follow them to get a better description, or a photo of the dog, but they had fled the scene rapidly.
They did not see fit to come back to check whether my puppy was injured or even to apologise. Clearly not at all concerned just left a wake of devastation, a terrified puppy, and myself in a terrible state as I really thought that dog was going to kill my beautiful fur baby. She is my constant companion & therapy dog, following 2 years of anxiety and fearfulness following my own trauma.
So I APPEAL TO YOU - If anyone has any information about who these walkers & the animal was I beg you PLEASE come forward and let the cafe know (they have my details so I can then further the report for the police/council), or alternatively contact the dog warden & the council yourself direct. This animal will strike again & it needs to be prevented, next time it could be a serious debilitating injury or a fatality.
I am convinced that dog (dog or bitch not sure which?) must have attacked before, I doubt very much this was a one off; the speed and efficiency with which that woman grabbed her dog said it all (thank goodness she had moved quickly it is the only thing in her favour), I also think they were regulars to the park and may even live locally, or walking distance especially as looked like they might have been joggers running with the dogs.
Someone must know who they are?
Have you also been a victim of this very distinct large black & white dog?
To put you real animal lovers minds at ease Poppy seems ok physically now (the next day) but I'm getting the vet to check her, she is quite sore in places on her hind quarters but luckily the beast did not get time to rip into her, but she was so badly shaken up she did not want to go down on the ground or near other dogs I just hope it does not affect her lovely sweet nature and love of play with the nice dogs of this world.
Just remember it could be your little fur baby next or your toddler/child at risk, and that by law ALL dangerous aggressive dogs should be under strict control, never let off lead, and in this case muzzled.
