First (& maybe Last???) time visiting Clifty Falls State Park

点评：My husband & I camped at Clifty Falls State Park for the first time June 6 - 10, 2024. Madison Indiana is a charming small riverfront town just outside of the park. We decided to go in to town to look around & have dinner Saturday night. Dinner was pizza & loaded fries with a side of dill ranch at a local restaurant called The Red Pepperoni. While the pizza was good, the loaded fries were the winner for us. Yum! We also toured the Lanier Mansion. Beautiful home with interesting history! Our tour guide was wonderful & we had a great time. We also went to the Lanthier Winery. It was very small, but we enjoyed tasting some delicious wines & strolling through their small, but very lovely garden with beautiful flowers.
Clifty Falls State Park, while very pretty, isn't for everyone. The hiking trails were all very difficult. We were unable to do any real hiking as I have health problems that keep me from doing things that are strenuous. The trails are also not marked very well once you got past the main signage that indicated the trail number. Hubby & I have ebikes so we did ride those but they do not have any specific biking trails for those of us who like to ride but aren't into mountain biking. Though we did ride our ebikes to the trailheads, we found that only 2 of those trailheads had bicycle racks to lock your bikes. We also did not see any waterfalls flowing while we were at this park. The only time you'll be able to see the waterfalls may be right after it's rained.
The campground is pretty far back into the park, which was alright, but it is uphill to get into it. Once at the campground, we found that the sites were, for the most part, pretty spaced out & most appeard to be fairly level. However, as the sites have no water or sewer, only electric in our loop, another loop has no electric, one would expect the bathhouses to be multiple & useful. While there were 3 bathhouses, 2 on the electric loop & 1 on the non-electric loop, the 2 on the electric loop, that we used, had issues. The 1st of the 2 bathhouses was very old. Usually that is not an issue, however this time it was as the shower stalls looked horrible. Paint was falling off the walls, the lighting was terrible & it just didn't make you feel comfortable. We took 2 different showers in this bathhouse because it was the closet to us. The 1st time we had lukewarm water for about 5 minutes. We thought that the next time would be better, however, the 2nd time we had NO lukewarm water, but instead had a nice cold shower. Ugh!!! I believe this was the fastest I've ever showered in my life! The next two times we showered were in the 2nd bathhouse, which was newer and each shower was a separate door on the outside of the building. They lacked locks that indicated the showers were in use which results in people listening to the door to know if anyone is inside, or knocking on the door, both of which are not fun when you are trying to shower. Luckily, my hubby 3D printed us doorknob signs just for this occasion to put on the outside of the door. As for the actual shower itself, we had high hopes that, as this appeared to be a newer bathhouse, this shower would be much better. Unfortunately for us, we immediately realized that wouldn't be the case. I will say that the water temp was great. However, the drainage was not working so the floor of the room filled up to the door jam with water, the shower heads were painful on your skin, & you had to push a button to make the water come out EVERY 8 SECONDS!!! That's not enough time for the water to get hot before having to push the button again. Before I could even get my hair wet to shampoo, yep, I had to push the button again. And again. And again. I've been to paid bathhouses that are better. At least you get continuous warm water for 4 - 5 minutes straight & you can always add a little more money for more time. At the very minimum, Clifty Falls State Park campground needs to allow campers at least 3 - 5 minutes of water uninterrupted.
