点评:The Ieros Naos Evaggelismoy ths Theotokoy, with its tall bell tower and clock, is located at the church's side entrance, facing the entrance to Mandraki Harbour. Built by the invading Italian forces in 1920 based on the architectural design of the Medieval Gothic Church of Saint John, with Gothic-style doors and windows, arches, and high ceilings.
Originally this building was a catholic church that served the Italian Catholic community till 1948, when Rhodes was reunited with Greece, and it turned into a Greek Orthodox Church. Then Greek painter Fotis Kontoglou painted the church's interior with interesting Neo-Byzantine style frescoes. Unfortunately, we could not enter the church, as it was late in the day.
TIP: Good location to take sunset photos of the fortress and two deer standing where the statue of the Colossus of Rhodes was supposed to have stood at the entrance to Mandraki Harbour.
