Exploring the WWI Western Front Battlefields Trail
1st Austalian Division Memorial的点评
点评：The 1st Australian Division Memorial is one of the WWI sites we visited as part of a 4 day self-drive tour of the Western Front Battlefields trail.
It is only a quick stop but worth it because in addition to the memorial, there are excellent information boards and the remains of a German bunker.
The memorial, a small obelisk-like monument, commemorates the 5,285 men of the 1st Australian Division who sacrificed their lives at Pozieres. Pozieres was of great strategic importance but had been held by the Germans until the 1st Australian Division were able to capture it in July, 1916.
We spent some looking at the panoramic map which gave us a good idea of the directions and distances to other WWI battlefields like Dernancourt, Ypres, Fromelles and Bullecourt.
The remains of the German ‘Gibraltar Bunker’ can also be seen as you walk between the carpark and the memorial. A German observation post, made out of reinforced concrete, it was captured by Australian soldiers during the Battle of Pozières.

* There is a carpark just of the highway
* It is easy to combine a stop here with a visit to the Pozieres Memorial/Cemetery because they are only minutes apart by car.
* Afterwards, Id recommend visiting Tommy’s Cafe which is just up the road and has an excellent collection of WWI artefacts and memorabilia.
