点评:The cruise ship docks about 700 meters from the end of the fjord. There are souvenir shops at the pier along with a couple of restaurants, but the main stores (grocery, clothing, etc) are at the mouth of the fjord (700m away).
There is a decent set of paths along the river up the valley to the red church (approximately 1 km up the main highway, or approximately 1.5km up the more scenic dirt road which starts across the river from the highway). The dirt road to the red church is easy to see and navigate after crossing the bridge in town. Many people opted to take this walk and stretch their legs. We downloaded a trail map of the area before we started our vacation, which we used a few times. We took the path up one side of the river (starting on the dirt road) to the rapids, and returned on the path along the bank of the river. The trail along the bank of the river is not for everyone. it is thin, uneven and requires paying attention to foot placement in several areas. Good hiking shoes were needed on these paths to deal with water, roots, rocks, uneven ground, muddy areas and wet or slippery ground.
Aside from walking around in Olden, there are several tour options available at the pier for purchase, including:
1) a 75 minute open air (double deck) bus that goes up the valley and around the lake to a glacier viewpoint (note - this is NOT a way to get close to the glacier. It is a way to view the glacier from far across the valley and lake AS LONG AS it is a clear day). When we were there, the valley was clear, but the mountain tops were clouded in throughout the morning and early afternoon, so the glacier wasn't really visible or distinguishable from the fresh snow or through the patchy clouds at glacier height.
2) a glacier tour (3.5hr trip) in a standard tour bus/coach
3) a local trolley to town and up the river/valley to a few local sights (church, rapids/cataracts bridge, base of the lake)
4) a bus to/from the sky lift (15min ride each way) and you can add-on the sky-lift (cable car) ticket(s) to the bus ticket (NOTE - it is possible to walk up/down to or from the sky-lift area at the top, but I don't have any information on the distance or time needed to do so. This is why it is possible to purchase bus transportation without buying the sky-lift ticket(s)).
5) kayak tours
We opted to go to the sky-lift (including the round trip cable car) first, then to ride the double-deck bus up the valley. We enjoyed it, but have some suggestions to consider:
1) the top of the mountain had fresh snow and some ice, so the hike we wanted to take at the top didn't work out. There are several paths to wander at the top, weather permitting (or if you have the right clothes and attitude).
2) it was cold at the top. Fortunately, it wasn't windy when we were there, so we walked outside to a couple of overlooks in the fog. The establishment is building more amenities (paths, more displays and other buildings) at the top, so there may be even more activities and options in the future
3) it was cloudy at the top of the sky-lift, so the overlooks (with nice displays showing the ridge line and mountain names surrounding the viewpoints) weren't visible. There were a few times when we could glimpse a misty view of the fjords below for a few minutes. We went on the first cable car that day, so it was very peaceful at the top on our own, but we had no view to speak of because of the clouds we were in. They did burn off in the afternoon, but that's not a guarantee this time of year.
4) there was a souvenir shop at the bottom and at the top, along with a lovely restaurant at the top with beautiful windows for views. There were also rest rooms and options to purchase coffee and/or cinnamon rolls at the top, so there were ways to stay inside and warm while enjoying the available views at the top.
5) you could stay as long as you wanted to at the top, then get in line to ride back down if you purchased the ride down. The cable car ran every 30min (minimum), and more often, as needed.
The transport bus back to the ship waited in the parking lot for a few minutes after the cable car arrived, then returned to the pier for another group. The timing was up to you.
Once we were back at the pier, we decided to take the double-deck bus up the valley (in the opposite direction of the sky-lift) to the glacier viewpoint. The views of the mountains from the upper deck were wonderful, but the wind was cold (so extra clothes were helpful). The drive was pretty, but the glacier viewpoint was disappointing. We were so far away, it was very hard to distinguish the glacier from either the clouds or the fresh snow on the mountain tops. This is not what I consider glacier sightseeing, but it was a pretty drive up a gorgeous canyon and it wasn't horribly expensive. We used the same tour operator for this that we used for the sky-lift and because it was our second tour with them, we received a discount on the second tour when we showed them the ticket from our earlier tour. Be sure to ask about the discount if you opt to take more than one tour with them!!!
