Underground Dungeons, a Tower Keep & An Iron Cage
Le Donjon de La Cite Royale de Loches的点评
点评:The Loches Dunjon is a part of the Royal City complex. Sitting on top of a high, rocky outcrop and encircled by medieval walls and ramparts, the complex includes the dunjon, the Royal Chateau, and St Ours Church (with the tomb of Agnes Sorel).
You can just wander around inside the grounds and visit the church for free but you’d be missing an awful lot if you didn’t also go inside the dungeon and chateau. It’s a single entry ticket and great value at 10,50 € for both.
This was one of the best-preserved tower dungeons I’d ever seen. Very impressive.
Although the rooms have little or no furnishings, the ticket includes free headphones and a ‘histopad’ (an iPad-like digital tablet with a touch-screen). Using a 3D virtual reality, various rooms are reconstructed to show how they might have looked back in the day. I’d not used one before but it worked really well and we enjoyed it.
We even enjoyed the kids’ game where you find and unlock a treasure in each room. We unexpectedly found ourselves getting quite into it.
The highlight is climbing the 121-foot-tall keep. With four stories, it’s a steep and relentless climb. The massive timber beams between floors are gone so it’s an empty space in the centre. It feels a little free-fall. I’m not fond of heights and felt a little wobbly at times. If heights are definitely not your thing, then this is not for you. Making it to the top is rewarding, with sweeping views of the surrounding valley.
Another point of interest is the iron cage designed by Louis XI to keep prisoners in maximum discomfort. Why he felt the need to have prisoners who were already locked in a small stone cell inside a medieval dungeon, further confined by being locked inside a metal cube is puzzling. He is supposed to have had Cardinal La Balue locked in the cage for 11 years. It was all very disturbing.
