When our wine group decided to go on an over night tour to Lodi, we raised our eyebrows; wasn't that the jug and box wine AVA? Fortunately, we went along with an open mind, and discovered a number of fresh, complex and flavorful at excellent price points. The leaders of our group were veterans of the LodI wine scene, having lived nearby in the foothills for years. By way of introduction, we went to the Lodi Wine & Visitors Center where they arranged a special tasting with Som Paul Marsh of the Lodi winemakers they liked with added suggestions from Paul based upon what they liked. We had a lengthy wine tasting with Paul, who can go on about the wine makers, the different Lodi terriors, the myriad grape varieties that thrive, and vivid descriptions of the flavors. So, while there is a lot of plonk grown in Lodi, there are growers and wine makers with have found parcels with good diurnal temp differences (35F in good locations) that produce satisfying wines at great price points.
