点评:Stopped in for lunch ... saw menudo on the menu and I'm thinking it ought to be good stuff because there's a whole bunch of "People's Choice" and "Best Chili" in Cheyenne plaques on the wall which suggest that Estela knows her stuff.
What I was expecting was a savory bowl of tripe and corn in a pork broth with onions and mild spices, served with a wedge of lime, oregano, and diced onions. Kinda' like I'd been getting at every Mexican restaurant I'd eaten menudo at for over 70 years.
What I got was a small shallow bowl of a thin broth with some onions, corn, seasonings, and a walloping dose of chili pepper heat ... spicy enough that my lips were still burning 15 minutes after eating the stuff. A totally out of balance concoction, without any savory flavors from a well prepared broth ... and the bowl held but 4 tiny pieces of tripe. Normally, one expects to find some remnants of the pork that was used for the broth, and at least a few good sized chunks ... if not more ... of tripe. But this bowl was missing both items, and the 4 pieces of tripe were literally not more then tiny 1/8" little shreds of that item.
At $8 for the serving that was a scant bowl of broth, I'd almost say this place was a rip-off. By way of comparison, Mi Terra in Cheyenne serves a large bowl of menudo that is savory and loaded with the missing items from what I was served today, accompanied with the customary side items. As well, they serve two large tortillas that are heated and wrapped in foil ... unlike Estela's where they put 3 small cold flour tortillas on the side of the plate. The gap in quality and quantity of food and concept between these two restaurants is huge ... but that's pretty typical of every other Mexican restaurant I've eaten at around the Western USA.
To say that Estela's completely blew it on this item would be an understatement. I can't speak for the other items on the menu, but if the posole is a similar item but without the "tripe", it would be a loser, too.
As one who grew up on Mexican dishes, living close to the border and being able to make many trips to Baja California for years ... and acclimated to capsaicin heat as a complement to the primary flavors of the cuisine ... what was served today was an absolute insult to the concept of Mexican cooking with fresh savory flavors mixed with a balance of spices.
The only reason that this review didn't get a lower rating was that the waitress, who we've seen for years in Pine Bluffs at the restaurants there ... did as good a job as she's always done for us in the past.
IMO, if you're seeking Mexican food in the area, you'll do far better in Cheyenne. There's a range of restaurants from a few of the smaller authentic places to the big "gringo" menu outfits such as The Tortilla Factory or Guadalajara.
Alternatively, Sadie's in Pine Bluffs is a local gem and their version of green chili ... without any pretensions of being a Mexican restaurant is pretty good.
