点评:My partner and I visited the Centro location on Nicollet Avenue to order take out. When we entered, things seemed straightforward enough as there was a large sign reading, "Order Takeout Here" hanging above the back counter.
After taking a few steps towards it we realized the obvious: we didn't have a menu. So we turned around to return to the counter for a paper menu and that's when we saw them: two touch screen terminals that said "Start Order Here" on the screen.
Things seemed straightforward again, but we quickly realized they weren't as the kiosk required a table number for takeout. (Read those last 8 words again.) After punching in random numbers because we were not dining in and, therefore, did not have a table number, we flagged down a member of the staff who told us to take a table number sign from the shelf above the kiosks, use that table number and wait with it for your order.
So we took a number sign and tried to order again. But the kiosk still wouldn't accept our table number. So we tried again. And again. And then we realized the kiosk we were trying on was out of order. So we moved to the other kiosk and were finally able to begin a takeout order.
Despite breaking the menu up in many categories, the actual selection was limited and restrictive. For example, you couldn't customize the pollo a la plancha taco. My guy wanted one but isn't a fan of cilantro and couldn't request it be left off.
Anyway, we ordered two tacos each as well as some yuca fries and then stood in the immediate area of the counter awkwardly holding a small piñata with a #7 sticking out of it. Our food was brought to us after a while and we left.
Upon getting home, we unpacked our order and found they packaged each pair of tacos together and the yuca fries in their own box. The problem was, all three boxes were identical and none of them were labeled. After eventually figuring out which tacos were which and simply accepting the abundance of cilantro on the chicken tacos as a necessary evil, we were subjected to a final insult.
Everything was spicy. The chicken was spicy. The chorizo was spicy (and I even customized it to not have serrano chile on it). The cactus petals were spicy. Not only that but, I thought they only gave me one eighth of a lime wedge for squeezing over both of my tacos. No, there was a second one -- hidden in the toppings of the nopales taco and I ate it whole with the taco itself. Even the yuca fries were spicy. And the crema dipping sauce made them even spicier.
All I tasted was the heat. I literally could not taste anything else. Was this preemptive revenge by Centro on two guys who just wanted to order takeout or does Centro think seasoning food with just chiles to the point where it's so hot that you don't even taste the food itself is normal?
There are plenty of other Mexican eateries on and off Eat Street that will do you better. Avoid Centro.
Eat Street
