Don't confuse this carving with the one in Menahga..they are totally different.
St. Urho Tree Trunk Carving的点评
点评:I am of Finnish descent. I have relatives all over NE Minnesota and along the North Shore. So I am very familiar with this area. Many people are aware of, or have visited Finland, Minnesota. I'm not sure how many has seen the excellent wood carving at the north end of town in a tiny wedge of a park.
It is represents St Urho is about 18 feet tall and is carved from a single tree.
It was carved in 1982 by a local man by the name of Don Osborn.
Now, it seems many people have confused this carving with the statue in Menahga, they are totally different. Yet internet searches have the two confused.
St. Urho – is the patron saint of the Finnish Vineyard workers. Before the last glacial period wild grapes grew with abundance in the area now known as Finland. The legend says he chased away the grasshoppers that were eating the grapes used to make wine. To this day, Finnish people all over the world celebrate St. Urho's Day on March 16. On that day they wear Purple and Green (for the grapes and the grasshoppers). The statue still stands proudly, but a nearby tree needs to be trimmed back to allow better views of it.
