The stand in question is something one could easily purchase at a dollar store for about a dollar (and I assumed this to be much much cheaper in the Philippines), yet the hotel demanded 400 pesos for the alleged damage—a notably high charge for a five-star establishment. The broken portion was about an inch at the back corner of the stand. I objected to this fee and requested to speak with a manager. Although I waited approximately 15 minutes, I never spoke with the manager; instead, the front desk clerk eventually informed me that I would not be charged. I understand that guests are liable for any damage incurred during their stay, but 400 pesos for such a minor issue seems unreasonable. I hope management reviews its policy on damage charges to prevent similar misunderstandings in the future.
