点评:I’m going to admit it didn’t get off to a great start when the drinks order came out wrong and instead of apologising the barman told me that “that was what the order had come through as”. He did return a bit later with the correct drink and a belated apology but the initial attitude didn’t inspire faith.
Having decided to forgo starters because they didn’t appeal and were quite highly priced we went straight for mains.
Unfortunately and for some reason I couldn’t quite work out there was a long delay on the mains but I have to say the waiter at this point was really spot on. Apologised for the long wait and provided some nibbles and a comp starter, I was beginning to get impressed. We even had the chef come out and apologise for the wait which we didn’t expect and was a nice touch.
And kudos to the chef the mains were beautifully cooked, I had the steak Diane which was quite lovely with a rich unctuous mushroom sauce and my wife the lamb which was pink and again really cooked to perfection.
At this point things went downhill badly. Our original waiter disappeared and the very quickly so did 2 of the chefs. We were left with one older gentleman (possibly the proprietor) who seemed a bit worse for wear and showed zero interest in asking if we’d like another drink or even a dessert. It was like we’d hit “clocking off” time and I do wonder if the junior chefs had a strict curfew.
When we heard the chef announce he was off home after waiting for someone to talk to us for about half an hour we gave up and asked for the bill. And then after the chap upstairs glassy eyed missed the request for the bill had to wave my hands in front of his face try and get him to acknowledge our presence, which was odd because he did seem very proactive in shmoozing some other tables.
So 3* - and for the first time ever I asked for the discretionary service charge removed because I expect some service and I would not have tipped the older chap. It was a bit like an episode of Ramsay’s kitchen Nightmares at the point he took over. My apology to the original waiter who deserved better.
If they sort out the wildly inconsistent service I think this would be a recommendation.
