点评:Whilst The Newt Gardens are an impressive new location in the local area and, no doubt, provide a worthwhile experience for able-bodied customers, I visited the Gardens with elderly parents, one using a walking frame and one in a wheelchair, and was astounded at the lack of facility for such users. In the main area surrounding the Threshing Hall, which accommodates the cafe, restaurant, farm shop and boutique, there were virtually no smooth surfaces, very few ramps if any, and no hold bars. There were cobblestones, ribbed concrete and uneven paving stones, making using a wheelchair very difficult and uncomfortable. The only evident way to get down into parts of the centre piece garden in this area was down steps. If there was an easier way for wheelchair users, this certainly wasn’t obvious. We ended up using the grass as it was the only surface anywhere near appropriate for a wheelchair but, clearly this is not ideal and not an option when wet and muddy. It has to be said that there was an excellent shuttle service for physically impaired visitors between the main area and the Roman Villa, with the staff being extremely helpful. However, once again, when reaching the Roman Villa site, the surfaces from the museum to the Villa were hugely challenging for anyone with mobility issues, being made of uneven paving stones and again we had to resort to using the grass. Of course it is important that the features of the attraction be authentic, but surely smooth strips of paving around the site should be expected, so as not to exclude certain groups of people. With The Newt Gardens having been built very recently, we were astonished that there hasn’t been some obligatory regulation to cater for wheelchair users when moving around certain areas of the site, even at the most basic level?
