点评:Despite all the dramatic accounts, the Keyhole route to Longs Peak is a plain old "challenging/difficult" hike with a little exposure here and there. I would say Class II most of the way with Class III in the last 1.5 miles. If you are afraid of heights or ledges or drops this isn't for you but I never felt in any danger. The Ledges and The Narrows are sidewalk width in most places with a few careful steps gee and there. The Trough goes on and on and on and will wear you down if not fit! Just look where you are stepping and don't rush and you'll be fine. My list of essentials: have good gear, including a helmet for rock falls around the Trough and the Homestretch. I wore TX2 La Sportive approach shoes which were a little light but very grippy. A burlier sole would have been nice, like the TX4, especially in the Trough and across the Boulder Fields where I stubbed my toes and scraped the sides of my feet a few times. You will need grip and slip protection so don't use your Nike's! But you don't need big mountain boots either. I didn't bring poles. You could, but leave them on the approach to the Boulder Field and pick them up on the way back. They're just in the way for that last 1.5 miles and if you are not careful stowing them can easily snag and unbalance you. Be sure you are sure-footed and strong, this is not for newbies and rookies and you will need excellent physical condition and stamina, strong legs and good balance. You CAN FALL if you're not in shape and if you are exhausted and jelly-legged from fatigue! Bring at least 3 litres (100oz) of water (add some electrolytes if you wish, I did) and plan on burning a lot of calories, so top up carbs every hour or 90m. Take hydration and nutrition dead seriously! Hydrate the night before and on the morning of and carb pre-load as if for a marathon, you will need the energy, for sure! Don't drink alcohol or smoke or use up any resources like that before this hike, you will need to be in great shape. Alcohol hydrolysis in your liver will steal energy and water that you need. We went from sea level to the summit without acclimatizing and certainly suffered from some altitude fogginess on the descent from 14k to 12k after we had busted our chops getting up, but our group had done plenty of altitude hikes before, including 20k on Kili and we felt comfortable. If you can get 24-48hrs in at 9-12k ft before the ascent, do that, it will make things less arduous. Start no later than 3am. Earlier is better. This is not because of parking, though the lot will be full at the TH at 2am (don't worry, you can park 500 yds down the road). You want to be on the peak by 10-11am so you're down to the tree-line again before the summer afternoon thunder rolls in. We just made it with rain and thunder starting at 1pm. Lightning is the single biggest risk if you're exposed. We hiked in August in perfect weather. But we packed a rain shell, puffy and a mid layer, just in case. You never know. If you are doing this with snow, well you know you need additional gear like crampons, spikes, ice-axe etc. I would not like to do this in snow or ice, definitely a risk of slipping then. Wet is OK, but still dicey, hence the grippy shoes advice. A wonderful, tough, fun, lovely views hike and a real treat to finish.
