点评:Buceo La Herradura
I’ve just come back from a dive with Buceo La Herradura in Marina del Este on Monday, 27th March 2023 and felt that I had to point out some things regarding health and safety, which everyone knows should be the first priority when it comes to scuba diving, or at least it should be.
First of all, getting on to the boat from the side of the marina is very tricky if you’ve never done it before and eventually the instructor offered me some advice and that was to sit down first, but I was thinking of trying to board standing up and it looked particularly dangerous. I understand the guy doesn’t speak much English and I don’t speak much Spanish, but they’ve just employed an English/Spanish guy called Danny who obviously speaks fluent English and they should be advising him to advise clients how to board the boat, rather than having him do menial tasks as a priority, which they seemed to be getting him to do. Again, if I’d fallen and injured myself, I am a 58 year old man, it could’ve had lasting damage and at the very least would’ve ruined my day, my holiday and potentially my life, but the guys here seemed to have a very cavalier attitude towards the safety of the client, more of which I’ll talk about.
Call me old-fashioned and trypically British, but a customer-centric business like this which relies on its customers for its survival, the customers’ health, safety and welfare should always come first. After all without the customers and without happy customers, and most importantly safe and healthy ones, they don’t have a business.
At one point in the middle of the dive, the instructor went AWOL and I was left at the bottom of the sea with no other company than some rather lovely fish. Now, again, call me old-fashioned and typically British, but abandoning your customer at the bottom of the sea to go off and do whatever, is not putting the customer first and is at least neglectful and could’ve been potentially fatal if I’d panicked. Fortunately I’m experienced enough of a diver to know that panicking doesn’t help. But the point is, if there’s only two people on a dive, one of them being the instructor, you don’t abandon your client for a millisecond, never mind 30 seconds, to go off sight-seeing at a dive location, he must’ve seen a thousand times before.
Getting back on the boat, I was left to my own devices climbing up the ladder and as a rather portly gentleman of a certain age, I could’ve done with a hand, or at least offered a hand, but the fellow driving the boat had more important things to look at on his phone - you can’t get the youth of today off the phone for love nor money, nor the risk to life and limb it seems.
Back in the changing rooms, I was struggling to get the gear off on my own and was left sing “Danny Boy” at the top of my lungs in the hope that Dan would re-appear and give me a hand, which after about 10 minutes he did thankfully, otherwise I’d be very hoarse by now and probably out of tune.
The final straw was that they had no Wi-fi so couldn’t access the Padi App on my phone in order to log the dive, which is important at the moment, as I’m trying to build up my dives to go towards my Dive Master, but the instructor said it didn’t work and seemed to be careless about the situation, offering to write it on a piece of paper, which is useless as you can’t add that info on to the app. He couldn’t give a monkeys really, so that’s one dive that won’t go logged and recorded.
The dive itself was very pleasant and I saw some wonderful sea life and rock and coral formations, but as nice as all of that is, customers’ health, safety, well-being and happiness should be the primary focus.
I know we’re in Spain on the Costa Tropical and it’s all supposed to be about fun and having a laugh and mañana, mañana but please focus on customers’ health, safety and well-being as a priority and everything else as a secondary focus.
That’s my tuppence worth but I think, if they can be bothered to read this, which I very much doubt, they will probably shrug their shoulders and say, who gives a monkey’s what some guirri borracho thinks?
Oh well, I guess I’ll have to go with another dive school for the remainder of my several month trip and see if they’re any better.
Mañana, Mañana!
